Meet Jacqueline

Program Area(s): Adult Basic & Secondary Education, Career Technical Education , English as a Second Language & Citizenship

The Challenge

Jacqueline (Jackie) came to the United States in 2016 and did not know any English other than the word "Hi." She knew she needed to learn English as soon as possible and enrolled in ESL classes at Madera Adult School, a member of the State Center Adult Education Consortium (SCAEC).

The Solution

Jackie applied to the Madera County Workforce Assistance Center (MCWAC) and was approved for WIOA services. In July 2017, she entered the Young Adult Program, English Language Learner Programs and was sponsored for HiSET classes at Madera Adult School (MAS). During this time period, Jackie was nurtured and adored by many employees and teachers. Her network of support grew very large, and Jackie's learning flourished in this environment. While Jackie was completing the last few months of classes, she met with a Transition Specialist (TS) from SCAEC to discuss her goals and future career aspirations.

Outcomes

In January 2018, Jackie, with the assistance of the SCAEC transition specialist, completed her first college and FAFSA applications. In March of 2018, Jackie completed her HiSET and earned her certificate. She was already working at the MCWAC in a paid work experience position as a receptionist, which assisted with the improvement of her computer skills and English-language acquisition. By November 2018, she was hired full time as a Workforce Tech I and was sponsored for the Microsoft Office Suite certifications. She has earned her first certification in Microsoft Word and is continuing her studies. Jackie also enrolled in the citizenship class at Madera Adult School, and in August 2018 she began taking classes at Madera Community College Center.
