Practices with Promise Success Story

Submitted By: Graciela Vasquez, PAACE Partnership for Adult Academic and Career Ed

PAACE and Cerritos College Offer 2 Years of Free Tuition

  • Type of Practice: Partnerships & Collaboration
  • Targeted Population: High School Equivalency Students
  • Program Area(s): Adult Basic & Secondary Education
  • Consortia Involved: Partnership for Adult Academic and Career Education

The Challenge

The PAACE Regional Consortium assists students from the partnering adult schools with the onboarding process of the college application, self-reporting tool, academic counseling and the FAFSA application. Through this process, the consortium has seen that the transition from non-credit to credit courses is costly for students and many do not have the means to pay for tuition. Many of the students who did not qualify for financial aid were forced to take one class a semester, ultimately prolonging their educational journey.

The Solution

The PAACE consortium is collaborating with the Cerritos College District to provide a bridge from our member high school equivalency students to the Cerritos Complete program. Cerritos Complete is a California College Promise program focusing on students completing their degrees on time. The program is an opportunity for high school seniors to transition to college, but through the partnership with PAACE, the high school equivalency students from our consortium districts can take advantage of the programs benefits. The PAACE program will create the pathway between the consortium adult schools to the college in order to provide high school equivalency students guidance in completing the necessary steps in order to qualify for the program.

Outcomes

The PAACE Consortium and Cerritos Complete partnership provides opportunities for the high school equivalency students from our consortium member districts (ABC Adult School, Bellflower Unified School District, Downey Adult School, and Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School) to benefit from: two-year free tuition, two-year early enrollment, step-by-step assistance, one-on-one counseling and advisement, college preparedness, career exploration and personalized schedule for fall and spring semesters.

The Data

In the 2018-2019 academic year, 41 students entered the College Promise program from the PAACE consortium. PAACE will track the students and continue to assist them throughout their academic journey.
