Summer bridge program helps create seamless transition to community college

The Challenge

Long Beach City College (LBCC) and the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), the members of the Long Beach Adult Education Consortium, wanted to find a way to create seamless transitions from LBUSD’s adult education program to college classes at LBCC. As a result of Assembly Bill 86, the members already had done a significant amount of work to develop a collaborative relationship and had worked together to improve adult basic education and English as a second language offerings in the region – and they wanted to further their work by providing adult learners with the tools they needed to be successful in college. The right tools and skills would help increase the students’ chances of enrolling in and completing their college studies.

The Solution

To address the challenge, in summer 2017, LBCC launched The Bridge, a five-week comprehensive program for nontraditional students aged 18 and older. The program includes academic courses, counseling services, campus orientation, student development workshops, leadership experiences and recreational activities.

The program targets students, including those who attend LBUSD’s adult education program, who have been out of school for extended periods of time or who are unsure if college is the appropriate path for them. Participants are paired with a peer mentor who helps them navigate the bridge program, as well as adjust to campus life, find ways to connect to LBCC, participate in confidence-building social activities and learn how to succeed as members of a larger community.

The program’s coursework focuses on goal setting, study skills, test taking and time management. Student can find support at the Student Success Center and also have access to
counselors who can help them establish educational and careers goals. Additionally, students may earn limited college credits by participating and are given priority registration for the fall semester upon completing the program.

Ultimately, The Bridge removes the mystery associated with college and any self-doubt that students may have, replacing it with self-confidence, awareness and focus.

Outcomes

The program shows significant promise in that every student who participated in the summer program went on to enroll at LBCC and were well-prepared with the tools and skills needed to establish a solid academic and social support system. As a result of this outcome, the college plans to host the bridge program again in summer 2018 and in the works are plans for two smaller programs to be held during the fall 2017 semester, possibly during weekends, to introduce adult education students from LBUSD’s program to the community college and the various career options that are offered.

The Data

All 11 students who participated in The Bridge in summer 2017, who initially were not focused on postsecondary education, went on to enroll at LBCC. Each student enrolled in 15 units of credit-bearing courses.
