Consortium implements uniform regional student support approach

The Challenge

Members of the San Luis Obispo County Adult Education Consortium needed to align student support services, including intake services, so that they were uniform for all members of the consortium, which includes one community college and three adult schools. Having aligned support services would allow adult education providers to more effectively serve students as they move through the system.  An aligned system promotes seamless transitions between adult education systems, and the community college, as well as America’s Job Center of California (AJCC), the consortium’s Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act partner for job-placement and work-skills programs.

The Solution

To address the challenge, the consortium adopted the noncredit student success and support program used by Cuesta College, and the adult school consortium members implemented the four core student success and support program services to create a common student services approach across the region. The four core services are orientation, assessment, counseling/noncredit educational plan and follow-up services.

Outcomes

As a result of a uniform approach to student services, consortium members have experienced an increase of the number of students who receive a common assessment, orientation, advising and follow-up services. Aligning these services has helped the different adult education providers identify students’ needs and goals, as well as their levels for proper placement, eliminating the need for students to complete this when they transition.

The Data

The consortium will begin collecting data for all core services starting with the 2017-18 program year.
