Capturing pre/post tests for nearly 2000 students that are transient with barriers preventing their persistence; capturing paired scores within a period of participation that included at least 40 hours of instruction; re-structuring staffing to accommodate a testing policy that supported our efforts to improve data integrity. These were some of our challenges.
We host a registration fair each semester and students receive a pre-test. Students that miss it are pulled out of class when and pre-tested. We developed a testing calendar over the course of the school year to capture post tests (those that have less than adequate instruction hours are excluded). If a student persists through the year, they will receive 5 test scores. In addition, our Accountability Team runs reports frequently and often by class section looking for students without a pre/post test and they are pulled out of class to test in an assessment center, which has expanded staffing and hours. We also provide Chromebooks at all locations to accommodate testing ‘on the spot’.
During the 2014-15 school year, 57% of students took pre/post tests. Since implementation and as of last school year, we are now capturing 70% paired scores and we hope to increase this to 75% this year. Additional implications included an increase from 31% to 59% of students who achieved Education Functional Level Gains (2014-2019) and an increase in student persistence from 58% to 70% (2016-19). Overall outcomes and performance are on the rise despite consistent decreases in enrollment.
